Unraveling The Ego
By Bart Sharp
The ego is one of the most commonly used terms, with many applications but most have less understanding of what an ego really is. According to David Hawkins, author of “Power vs. Force”, the ego is a part of our consciousness that is unresolved and is unconsciously trying to resolve our pains by expressing itself. In an odd way this is reassuring because we will act out what we need to deal with. Our job is to pay attention to how we act in the world thus seeing our limitations.
For example, if one of our base fears is that we will be abandoned by our mother, we will attract people that test that very fear. It may be that we will attract partners that stimulate and re-create similar past scenarios again and again. It appears that we are placing ourselves in our own version of hell in doing this, not knowing why we create such conflict, nor why we seem to keep making the same mistakes over and over again.
There is hope! We can transform these limiting patterns that the ego reinforces. There are many steps to this transformation. For now, start with the first step:
Be willing to admit, the problem always begins with us.
The question I like to ask when my ego presents a limitation is: “What am I doing to create this?” or “What am I not getting about this, that I am creating?” There’s something about these kinds of questions that opens us up to a possibility of a perspective higher than that of our mind. Often, thoughts immediately show up that give me the insight I need. Why? I am asking my heart and my body for the information, not my mind.
One thing we can count on is that the ego will most likely never go away. We can have a better relationship with it though. It is like an invisible internal organ trying to express our weaknesses so we will see them. The best thing that you can do for your ego is have allowance for it, observe your behaviors and thoughts without judging. Be a listener of your actions.
Maybe transcendence of the ego is learning to truly honor one-self in having limitations.
